Tennessee Now Offers Two Types of Handgun Carry Permit

1. Concealed Carry Only Permit (online training, 2 hours)


The Tennessee Concealed Carry Only Permit can be obtained by taking an online class.  The Sate of Tennessee requires a course such as this one, in order to obtain the Tennessee Concealed Carry Permit.

2. Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit (live training, 8 hours)


The course must be completed and the participant must complete the written and shooting portions in order to obtain a Tennessee Enhanced Carry Permit. The class consists of four hours of classroom instruction followed by four hours of range time. You should be familiar with your firearm before taking this class. You will be required to qualify on the range.

  • At this time has reciprocity agreements with 39 other States
  • This class also requires registration with the State of TN at https://dl.safety.tn.gov/. Click on “Handgun Permits”, fill in the requested information and click “log in”. You must do this prior to your desired class date to be assigned a required application number.

Path to the Tennessee Concealed Carry License

Tennessee has laid out a specific path to obtaining a concealed carry license.  This license is separate from the Enhanced Handgun Carry License for the state of Tennessee.

  • Take your certificate to the local Department of Motor Vehicles branch near you with these items:
    • Your printed certificate
    • Proof of US Citizenship
    • ID
    • Permit Fee

FAQ

  • Is this a real class?

    Yes! In 2019 Tennessee created a Concealed Carry permit requiring you to learn basic firearms concepts and no range qualification. This class had to actually be approved by the State of Tennessee. Tennessee currently offers two options for carrying a handgun in the state of Tennessee, an online Concealed Carry class and an in-person Enhanced Handgun carry Class with live fire. This is the class for online certification which means you can carry a handgun Concealed ONLY.

  • How long does the class take?

    The class is approximately 110 minutes and contains valuable knowledge for not only the beginner but also for those with previous firearm experience. Once you purchase the class you have 1 year to finish it, so you can start and stop whenever you need. No need to sit through it all at once.

  • Once I finish the class, is there a time limit to get my permit?

    Once you have completed the class and printed your certificate you have one year from that date to apply for your permit.

  • Can I gift this class?

  • Do you lose reciprocity if you get the concealed only permit?

    No, you keep reciprocity with 35 out of 36 states. See our website for more information.

  • Does this take the place of needing any in-person training?

    While this online-only course will enable you to get the carry permit, we strongly suggest you also get in person training. The enhanced handgun permit class does not really count as the range portion does not train you and even with it we suggest quality classes.
